Acoustical Archive

The project establishes an acoustic archive of the HIL building, documenting both measurable acoustic data and everyday soundscapes. By doing so, it adds a multisensory perspective to the building's previously predominantly visual documentation.

This research project aims to document and analyse the acoustic environment of the HIL building through a comprehensive series of room acoustical measurements and soundfield recordings. Measurements will be conducted across a variety of spatial typologies, including meeting rooms, lecture halls, corridors, workshops, and offices, to characterise their current acoustic conditions in terms of reverberation, sound insulation, and overall auditory quality.

In parallel, immersive soundfield recordings will capture the everyday soundscapes of these spaces at various times of day and across different periods in the academic calendar, including during the semester, breaks, and evenings. This temporal and spatial diversity will allow the creation of a detailed auditory archive that reflects the dynamic acoustic identity of the building.

Beyond serving as a classical archive preserving the building’s current acoustic state, the resulting dataset will function as a valuable tool in the upcoming renovation phase. The auditory archive can inform design decisions by providing tangible examples of desired and undesired acoustic conditions, helping designers and planners to understand better how spatial and material changes influence auditory perception and comfort.

The project is further integrated into our teaching activities. A seminar week will introduce students to methods of acoustic measurement and soundscape recording. At the same time, focus works will allow in-depth exploration of specific spaces or acoustic phenomena within the HIL.

Ultimately, the project bridges the gap between scientific measurement and perceptual experience, creating a framework for evidence-based acoustic design and contributing to a more informed and sensitive renovation process.
