Transforming with data

A data-driven approach enhances digital building models by incorporating performance data. This provides a transparent and measurable basis for making informed decisions about renovating the HIL building.

In this project researchers explore how data and digital models can improve the sustainable transformation of the HIL building. Using software from the ETH spin-off vyzn, the digital building model is enhanced with information on materials, spaces and performance. This creates a clear and consistent basis for comparing different renovation strategies.

As part of the project, design options are evaluated using key sustainability indicators such as lifecycle performance, energy efficiency and summer thermal comfort. Instead of relying on fragmented documents or manual estimates, this approach enables automated, scalable and transparent analyses, even in early planning stages.

Moving from experience-based to evidence-based decisions helps speed up planning, reduce uncertainty and support more targeted sustainability strategies. The digital concept study shows how an integrated, data-driven workflow can improve long-term building performance and serve as a scalable model for future renovation projects across ETH Zurich’s portfolio.
