The Hönggerberg campus is evolving into a forward looking, ecologically connected and socially vibrant place for learning and research. At the heart of this development lies the principle of building on what already exists: open spaces, materials and vegetation structures will be carefully analyzed and thoughtfully enhanced rather than replaced.
The Campus as a Living Ecosystem
The Hönggerberg campus is being developed into a connected, climate-resilient and vibrant place for learning and research – supported by innovative water management, new habitats, and high-quality open spaces.

Another central focus is the contemporary handling of rainwater. The water concept is based on an integrated rainwater management approach that prioritizes storage, infiltration and evaporation – with the sewer system serving only as an emergency overflow. Green roofs, retention areas, and surface infiltration systems help improve the microclimate while meeting the requirements of the drainage plan.
Increasing building density will be counterbalanced by a new diversity of habitats, creating living environments for flora, fauna and people. Roof gardens, façade greening and ground based planting areas introduce varied ecological qualities and strengthen biodiversity.
The original relationship between interior and exterior spaces is also being further developed: multifunctional places for learning, research and social exchange will emerge, reinforcing the campus as a social environment.
Hönggerberg is envisioned as a campus whose open spaces, water infrastructures and vegetation systems are woven into a coherent, resilient landscape framework – a living laboratory for sustainable building culture.
