80 Mock-ups made from Reclaimed Material

At the start of the semester, a workshop took place as part of Studio Foundations, bringing together 350 students, craftspeople, and supervisors in the HIL underground car park. Over the course of three days, this unremarkable parking area was transformed into a bustling construction hall where participants designed, built, and exhibited together.

Students working in the repurposed underground car park.

As an introduction to the design semester, students worked in small groups to investigate meaningful material combinations and hybrid, reversible connections using reused components. The newly established on-site warehouse for reclaimed material, along with various workshops for wood, metal, concrete, rammed earth, and other materials, allowed for a direct engagement with physical components and different construction methods. The iterative interplay between material, detailing, and system resulted in structures with a profound impact on the spatial and architectural expression. These physical mock-ups now serve as the constructive starting point for the students’ individual semester projects.

The workshop was supported by several workshops from the Departments of Architecture and Civil Engineering and was actively guided by approximately 20 craftspeople. The exchange and synergies between teaching and research were enriching for both sides and highly valued.

To conclude the event, the mock-ups were presented at the parking lot, and the exhibition was ceremoniously opened alongside the department leadership and all participants. The opportunity to collaborate and reflect with so many stakeholders in one space holds great potential for the department and gives the underutilized parking area a new future.
