Why is everyone looking up?

The LLHIL planning team’s project office becomes a space for learning and investigation for students taking the “Master of Integrated Building Systems I and II” courses at the Professorship of Architecture and Building Systems (A/S), led by Professor Arno Schlüter.

Using the HIL building as a case study, the students explore how comfort, climate and energy consumption interact – and develop alternative solutions for the buildings of tomorrow.

Looking up is particularly worthwhile: parts of the suspended ceiling in the project office have been removed. What is normally hidden becomes visible – from the concrete ceiling and building services to the structural elements. At the same time, the space itself changes: its height, materiality and acoustics.

On site, the students compare the existing building with the plans. How does the room change without the previous ceiling panels? What does the newly exposed volume mean for comfort and climate? And what insights can be gained for a future refurbishment?

In this way, the project office itself becomes a Living Lab: an openly accessible space where the existing building can be examined, questioned and directly experienced as part of the experiment.
