Anyone who spends time at the HIL regularly is familiar with many of these patterns from personal experience. Towards the end of the semester, lecture halls begin to empty out, while the design studios remain active late into the night and often throughout the weekend. During semester breaks, by contrast, the building can at times feel almost deserted.

With the project The Rhythm of HIL, we are making these dynamics visible and measurable. Using anonymized data from the building’s Wi-Fi routers, we can see how many people are present in different areas of the HIL at different times. This data is used to create visualizations of occupancy and movement patterns across days, weeks, and seasons.
